Round Midnight Project • Nocturnes

The album’s title, translating as The Way of the Winds, refers to the many musical traditions Matthieu Saglio’s music has absorbed. A jazz pulse informs many of the album’s tracks, and classical influences, reflecting the French-born cellist’s formal training in Rennes, surface in the baroque “Las Cathédrales”, the album’s final piece. Saglio has lived in Valencia since 2002, and has absorbed that city’s vibrant cultural mix. The result is a richly flavoured musical stew, downbeat in tone, and spiced by a gentle, but compelling rhythmic drive. North African laments and Andalusian blues are prominent ingredients and tango is a distinct strand.

The album opens with the contrasting moods, Arabic scales and exemplary musicianship of “L’appel du Muezzin”. The composition begins as a mournful cello extemporisation over a sustained multi-tracked drone then cuts suddenly to the percussion-fuelled bounce of a village dance. “Bolero Triste” comes next, belying its title with the flavours of French chanson. Here Saglio supports Vincent Peirani’s accordion with gentle plucks and strums and both solo lyrically. As the album continues, compositions mix traditions and change direction as though cued from within. Thus, the cellist introduces “Metit” with syncopated jazz, but the body of the piece is a showcase for the Senegalese-born singer Abdoulaye N’Diaye. “Amanecer” delivers broody Nils Petter Molvaer trumpet, “Caravelle” the sting of Nguyên Lê’s guitar and both feature plangent jazz-inflected cello and lilting 5/4 support. The cellist can soar into the upper register with the dexterity and sonic register of a violin, and when actual violinist Léo Ullman combines with Saglio on “El Abrazo” and “Sur le Chemin”, their phrasing is so close it is hard to tell them apart. Indeed, Saglio’s vibrant tone, touch and technique stand out on every track, but, impressively, never at the expense of his guests. [Mike Hobart - ft.com]

If Grief Could Wait...

Not quite a jazz album, this exquisite performance for voice, harp and period fiddles joins Susanna Wallumrød's light-touch singing and the evocative, interweaving lines and stately enunciation of Henry Purcell's 17th-century church and theatre music, some Wallumrød originals, two Leonard Cohen songs and Nick Drake's Which Will. It's a unique and audacious collaboration with baroque harpist Giovanna Pessi that has the makings of an unlikely cross-genre hit.

Wallumrød's subtle delivery of contemporary lyrics such as "Who by barbiturate/ Who in these realms of love/ Who shall I say is calling" from Cohen's Who by Fire, or his chilling call-of-fate lines in You Know Who I Am, have an astonishing impact when set against the steady turns and rolls of Pessi's harp, Marco Ambrosini's keyed-fiddle nyckelharpa and Jane Achtman's viola de gamba. The latter has a cello's resonance at times, the harp a guitar's, and the quiet force of Wallumrød's personality within such a formal early-music structure is mesmerising.

Recorded in three days in Lugano, November 2010, "If Grief Could Wait" is an intimate album of very special character. Given impetus also by the nyckelharpa of Marco Ambrosini and Jane Achtman's viola da gamba, the project has Pessi's arrangements of Henry Purcell songs at its core. It begins with "The Plaint" (from The Fairy Queen of 1692) and continues with "If Grief Has Any Pow'r To Kill", and "O Solitude" (from The Theatre of Musick), as well as "Music For a While" (from Oedipus) and "An Evening Hymn" (from Harmonia Sacra) But Purcell's music has never been heard quite like this. Threaded between his songs and instrumental pieces here are works of singer-songwriters Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake, as well as songs by Susanna Wallumrød herself.

"If Grief Could Wait" is neither a project that adheres rigorously to ideals of historical performance practice, nor one that strives self-consciously to "cross over". Pessi and Wallumrød offer music that they love, and all of it is played with commitment by the participating musicians. Purcell and Cohen are respected on their own terms, and Susanna's pure voice and Giovanna's subtle and evocative arrangements bring continuity to the repertoire. And, as Pessi points out, Cohen and Drake songs from the last century are also, from a contemporary perspective, `old music'.

"Diyorlar ki Hiç Bir Şey Aynı Kalmaz" (Aru sendou no hanashi [They Say Nothing Stays the Same]) isimli film Japonya'da oldukça sevilen bir aktör olan Joe Odagiri'nin ilk yönetmenlik denemesiymiş.

In The Mood for Love]" olacaktır.

Mark Hollis ya da The Art of Disappearing Completely

Miniatures of Glauco Venier

For pianist Glauco Venier, Miniatures – his first solo album- is a kind of diary, atmospherically reflecting upon early memories, early experiences of music, and in turn casting its own quiet spell: “I grew up in a very small village in northern Italy, and I’m still living there. The Adriatic Sea is nearby, then rivers, lakes, hills. There’s a lot of silence.” There were no brass bands, he explains, in Gradisca di Sedegliano. “My approach to music, when I first discovered it, was through the organ in the local church. And I fell in love with that sound, and with the composers of music for the organ…I have memories, good memories, of playing the organ in the church, in the dark, through the cold winters.

Several strands of influence are in fact woven together in the modestly-titled Miniatures whose eighteen tracks are episodes in an unfolding narrative. Although we hear mostly solo piano, Glauco plays gongs, cymbals and bells, the lightly-struck metals creating an attractive ambiance, at times like wind-chimes in the breeze.

Much of Miniatures is improvised, but Glauco also brought in material, sometimes from different musical environments. “Gunam”, for instance, is a tune from singer-songwriter Alessandra Franco which Glauco had played with the author on her own album, while the Komitas and Gurdjieff pieces derive from arrangements he had drafted for the trio with Norma Winstone and Klaus Gesing. One context informs another. “Between the percussion music, the tunes from other situations, and free playing I had a lot of material prepared, at least in my mind…these three elements I felt, could account for maybe 50 per cent of the album, and the rest would be up to the spirit of the moment…

Miniatures is an album which also should be listened as a soundtrack while reading André Aciman's touching novel or watching the unforgettable movie of Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name.

Janne Mark with Arve Henriksen | Pilgrim

Janne Mark writes hymns. And yet there is nothing about her that is stuck in a fusty tradition. She writes in the here and now, she is socially aware and committed, and in her work she draws on the freedom of jazz and all of the breadth of the Scandinavian folk tradition. And that is how her songs have established their place outside the canon of sacred music and in the secular space. As she explains herself, “the music of ‘Pilgrim’ is written for people who are unfamiliar with the church as well as for those who know it well.”

Henriksen is an important figure in Nordic jazz, and is also known for his work with Lars Danielsson on projects such as the “Liberetto” albums. Henriksen’s unique flute-like trumpet sound with all its emotion and expressiveness fits in superbly. In fact Mark had wanted to incorporate it into her music for a long time. “Arve’s sound reaches into the deepest layers of human existence,” she says. “When I first heard it, it affected me so completely and totally, I knew I had to follow the path of that sound.”

The Danish hymn tradition is agrarian. Most hymns were written in the countryside where the majority of Danes used to live, but Mark incorporates the urban space into her hymn-writing more than any other modern practitioner, and has found a unique way to reinvent the Danish hymn-writing tradition. Indeed she has been described as being like a musical cornflower at the hub of the city.

“Pilgrim" is an engaging and thoughtful album with plenty in it to discover. It is a haven of peace and quiet in a world beset with restlessness and uncertainty. It is also the portrait of a fascinating artist who is little known as yet outside Denmark. Janne Mark has embarked upon a path between hymns, songwriting, folk and jazz, and has done so with great success.

Phantom of Aleppoville

Second is always difficult. Not only in music, but also in life. However Benjamin Clementine, once discovered as a homeless busker, has overcome this difficult job: Streaming his second album, with a story of our days. The Mercury-winner has swerved the mainstream and made an avant garde concept album about Aleppo, the refugee crisis and two flies in love. In an interview just before the release, he stated that “I wrote this album as a play. It was a tale of two flies traveling, and they discovered so many things. They discovered new animals that they’d never seen before, and then one left the other. So I, as a third person, the narrator, am telling the story of two flies. That’s how I came up with the album title. And of course the theme is about aliens — flies being aliens — and of course…

Anyone expecting an album of unchallenging fodder is in for a shock. Like the voyage faced by its desperate, stateless subjects, I Tell A Fly is no easy ride. But for anyone seeking deepness, Clementine whispers with his poems, heart, and soul. It was triggered, he explains, when the phrase “an alien of extraordinary abilities” was used during the process of securing his American visa. But what’s particularly impressive is that it’s not a theme addressed simply in the lyrics, but evoked by a constantly shifting, discomfiting musical backdrop, in which polite piano and harpsichord motifs are disrupted by jarring bursts of throbbing, whining synthesiser and layers of Clementine’s own bizarrely operatic background vocal keening and muttering.

Opening track Farewell Sonata begins with a doomy, echo-drenched a capella chorus that shifts from speaker to speaker, is replaced by a piano instrumental influenced by late 19th-century impressionist music, which in turn gives way to discordant synthesiser, a burst of fragmented rock decorated with highly mannered vocals, glitching noise, then more Ravel-esque piano to fade.

At times, it’s like being caught in a crowd, swept along in a direction you didn’t anticipate. In “By The Ports Of Europe”, the result is a kind of berserk Brel chanson bruised with classical pretensions; elsewhere, the songs swing manically between lovely, Debussyan rippling piano, bustling jazz drums and bass, and grating discords flung into straitlaced musical forms – including, in the refugee song “God Save The Jungle”, a perversion of the UK national anthem. Indeed, the music’s evocation of the wanderer’s struggles effectively frees Clementine from simple narrative statement and opinion, enabling him to explore more oblique lyrical strategies, from the impermeable references to acquaintances like “one Turkish boy from Camberwell” and the “Paris friend [who] had a little pen”, to the evocative assertion in “Better Sorry Than A Safe” that “behind each lion awaits a lazy dragonfly”.

Soul of America

The Away Days: Dreamed at Dawn

The Istanbul-based band The Away Days released their debut album Dreamed At Dawn earlier this year. However I distanced my ears from their sound due to silly happiness surrounding any attempt from Turkish music scene when a band or a musician receives some attention from “the West.” A kind of Euro-centrism, a kind of orientalist gaze, and of course a kind of histeria of the West which is epidemic not only in Turkey but also in whole East. So although I continued to follow their post and events, I refused to listen to their debut album. But I was wrong.

They absolutely had caught a nice tune surrounding almost entire album and each song. With touchy guitar tones, the music of Dreamed at Dawn takes you away from reality for a brief moment and allowing the mind to wander – filling it with color and possibility. But not so far and beyond: As the title of the album reflects the album is “like a zipped recap of all our lives so far in Istanbul. You can find all the happiness and sorrow in it." the slower tracks such as "White Whale", "Making Ends Meet", "Dream of How", "Now You Don't Know" and especially "Monks" capture the habitat of recent Turkey, Istanbul with political unrest and blur atmosphere with some real intent. Almost each track has a unique sound (while vocals are just a bit repetitive, but anyhow, not an obstacle to enter the atmosphere of the track). My favorite is the last track: Layers which I would like to edit into a beat waving the arabesque sound of our away days, here in Turkey.

George Cosby: Haunting and soulful

A strikingly-voiced, talented and poetic songwriter from London, George Cosby has unique, haunting and soulful sound. Resembling, to some extent, Jeff Buckley. Able to create a fragile poetic atmosphere in his each song. Particularly when playing solo. A guitar player, devoted to music who is not to do what everyone else in the music industry is doing. Writing his own poems and searching for his own tunes. He says “I was just trying to write something that I felt to me was real and honest in some way.” Honesty brought a sudden rise to popularity for the dulcet-toned performer. Prone to shine and chasing the dream he ain't found yet. Appeared with his debut EP Human Touch in 2015, George Cosby will help you to feel more with his powerful music and lyrics along with catchy voice. Waiting to hear his melodramic voice again and again...

A real angry revolver: Sepultura | Chaos A.D.

The story of Sepultura has been always stranger (and more entertaining) than fiction. Just like an impossible climb in full sweat and blood, from third-world obscurity to international stardom.

In the late 1980's and early 90's, in a time of massive upheaval, the Soviet Union had started falling apart with a semi-victory of neoliberalism against almost everything that symbolizes the former three decades, from cultural revolution to the state communism. And all the garbage was left in the periphery of the world: Latin America was seeing a massive crime wave in some nations and the last of its US-backed dictators being deposed in others.

Thrash metal was using up all of its old ideas and looking for new ones, and it was a way of expressing rage, anger and aggression against the system in the periphery of the world. Sepultura had been taking note of all this happening around them and over time their focus had shifted from simple speed and brutality with lyrics about the occult towards slower and more crushing fight-grooves with songs about the much more real horrors of pollution, illness, callous businesses, abusive and corrupt governments, unreliable media, bigotry, and war.

Chaos A.D. (1993) with its highly political natural ingredients, a bit controversial for the habitat of metal music, was a real answer to the semi-victorious neo-liberalism which was circulating and suffocating the world. Album immediately became Sepultura’s defining work, which still stands as arguably one of the most distinctive moments in heavy metal history. It’s an unprecedented fusion of metal with Latin rhythms; the riffs are prominently undercut with dense layers of ensemble percussion and field recordings of the indigenous Xavante people of Brazil’s interior.

Album was not only referring explicitly to injustices in Brazil, but also was an indicator of the near future which we live now: from the rise of Biotech to the Slave New World, from harsh capitalist Propaganda to the We Who Are Not As Others. And of course War For Territory. Chaos A.D., with its each song and lyrics, was a real revolver straightened to the world order, and also was a catalog of our current life.

Anaïs Mitchell: Hadestown at the age of late-late capitalism

From operas by Monterverdi, Glück, and Offenbach, to a film by Cocteau and a play by Tennessee Williams, to (one half of) a record by Nick Cave, the myth of Orpheus has provided inspiration for artists, writers, and musicians across the centuries. Anaïs Mitchell’s latest album Hadestown thus situates itself in a venerable cultural tradition, spinning an ambitious 20-track song-cycle—or self-styled “folk opera”—out of the myth.

Alongside arranger Michael Chorney and director Ben T. Matchstick, Mitchell originally developed Hadestown for the stage: the work was performed by Mitchell and a revolving crew of musicians in a tour across New England. For the album version, however, Mitchell and producer Todd Sickafoose have opted for some deluxe casting, with Ani DiFranco taking on the role of Perspehone, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon as Orpheus, Greg Brown as Hades, The Low Anthem’s Ben Knox Miller as Hermes, and the Haden Triplets (Tanya, Petra, and Rachel) as The Fates—not forgetting Mitchell herself as Eurydice, of course. The results are incredibly good: With Hadestown, Mitchell and her collaborators have crafted an Americana classic that doesn’t require a Classics degree to appreciate.

Hadestown follows the structure of the Orpheus myth closely, while providing a fresh, novel framework for it. The album’s underworld is, in Mitchell’s phrase, “an exploitative company town” in an epoch evocative of Depression-era America. Here, Orpheus wields a banjo not a lyre, while Hades is a “sadistic, wall-building boss king” whose wife Persephone “moonlights as the proprietress of a Speakeasy”. The context informs the musical approach, or vice versa, which moves seductively through folk forms: blues, jazz, ragtime, swing. The accomplished band includes Sickafoose, Rob Burger, Jim Black, Josh Roseman, Nate Wooley, Marika Hughes, and Tanya Kalmanovich, amongst others.

Şiir, dizeler, İsmet Özel'in ilk kez duyduğum sesi, İsmet Özel'in ilk kez duyduğum dizeleri ve beat, rap, hip-hop.

Mette Henriette: A sound that takes you to the places in time and space

I like sound. Because, it is invisible. Just like the sand, it finds its way on your skin and takes you to the places in time and space.

One of the first sounds I remember is the sound of the owl. I remember sitting in my grandmother's post-garden, imitating the different owl calls. In fact the second title on the album is the sound of an owl. Perhaps you noticed.

Another sound that I remember vividly is the sound of my father's stereo. I would wake up in the mornings - I was an earlybird - and have breakfast listening to his records. I guess I was a curious kid. I talk to strangers, train my black poodle, bee balm, hunted, fly fished, made perfume from forest flowers. I wrote letters with my communist grandfather and band them with pots and pans on the kitchen floor.

Then I got a saxophone. The saxophone allowed me to paint with sound colours and tell stories with no words. When I picked it up, time disappeared and we were one. All the people I need, all the places I see… The sense, their smells, and flavours and tastes. Every sensory impression and personal expression influence me as a human being and as an artist.

My name is Mette Henriette. Mette means pearl. Henriette is derived from my Sami grandmother. Because of the impression of the indigenous people of Norway, I am the first generation in my family carry this Sami heritage with pride. I'm sure you can hear this in my music.

Traders Pop'a düzenli dergilerden birisi de The Wire'dı.

Bettina Köster'e de The Wire'ın 2008 Aralık sayısında denk gelmiştim. Ve hemen peşine düşmüştüm.

O sıralarda Queen of Noise albümünün hazırlıkları içindeydi.

Atmospheres is based on such a kind of configuration that present a beautiful collection of jazzy, moody, and, yes, atmospheric tone poems. Recorded in June of 2014, this double album from pianist Tigran Hamasyan, trumpeter Arve Henriksen, guitarist Eivind Aarset, and sampler Jan Bang. Hamasyan plays some careful piano in the vein of Keith Jarrett, while Bang and Aarset provide some slowly morphing sonic textures and Henriksen adds in some long held notes.

As the young Armenian pianist Tigran Hamasyan made plain from the start, his ancestry would always anchor his music however eclectic and westernised it became. Hamasyan’s folk references (notably to Komitas, Armenia’s legendary composer-priest) bring a timeless lyrical lilt to the contemporary sound of this new electro-acoustic quartet, which features the luminous trumpet sound of Arve Henriksen, guitars by Eivind Aarset and cutting-edge electronics from Jan Bang.

The pairing of Hamasyan and Henriksen, meanwhile, brings an unexpectedly song-based seductiveness to an all-improv session including such hi-tech experimenters as Aarset and Bang. Throughout the collection, Henriksen doesn’t play his horn like he’s the leader of a peppy band, instead, he plays slowly and carefully, holding his notes until they become like someone wailing over a lost love. Hamasyan plays like he’s contemplating every mode, often just hitting one note and then waiting, sometimes for a few seconds.

But while much of Atmospheres is dark, moody, and, yes, atmospheric, some of the songs mix things up, including some of the “Traces” tracks. Most of the songs were written by Hamasyan during the recording of his widely aclaimed 2015 album Luys i Luso with prominent references to Armenain folk music and culture, genocide and the music of Komitas. While the album does have a coherence — thanks to all of the songs sharing both the same instrumentation and style in which those instruments are played — there are times when the things are still atmospheric, just not as darkly so.

Delilik
